Mum, this was the speech I did at your baby boy's wedding... I was sure to tell everyone how proud you would have been to see him mary Kris:
I JUST WANTED TO OPEN WITH
a quick observation that I feel needs highlighting… Kris's amazing and radiating beauty today is making James way more handsome than he actually is!
So let me begin... I am Kelly, the older (yes older) Sister of the
Groom.
I am delighted and it's my pleasure to be saying a few words now, and first I would like to congratulate the happy couple by wishing them lots of fun, happiness and peace in their future ahead together. Cheers from me!
NOW ITS TRADITION
that I say a some embarrassing stuff about my brother… But as many of you will know, its not in my nature to do that… if you knew me and James growing up you'll know that we were very similar in
many ways…
• Very Humble... of course!
• Incredibly attractive - undeniable!
• Great Atheletes
• Excelled at school
No no… seriously, we were both very lucky growing up to have so much opportunity, thanks to our parents, Mike and of course Janet (who sadly passed away last year but would be a very proud Mum today if she were here for sure).
SPEAKING OF MUM
I was reminded the other day of another of James and I's favorite things to do when we were young:
• Dressing up in Mum's costume jewelry,dresses and make-up…!
(We made exceptionally beautiful young ladies ill have you know!!! Only kidding: I used to force him play dress up with me - and I have the photographs!!!)
ACTUALLY
some of my fondest memories of growing up with James (that happily coincide with when we finally got our own bedrooms) include things like:
• US Playing 40/40 (Tag) or Rounders (baseball) in the streets around our house
• US Messing around in the back garden with Dad
• US Getting up to all sorts of mischief with our cousins (some of which, Noel and Luke, are here today, the others send their wishes especially Karen from the UK)
• ALL of US Enjoying a full-English breakfasts or Bacon Sandwiches (thanks Dad) on a Sunday morning!
We also have great memories of the family holidays to Spain and especially the skiing trips to Austria!!! It was funny coz James tried so hard to be as good as me on Skiis… and you know what, he nearly made it…. Such a trooper my Bro... ;)
I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT
James and I were quite pleasant and well behaved children… but I also know we fought a lot, as siblings do!
To name but a few, there was:
• the Pushing him down the stairs over a dressing gown incident
• the Cracking his head with a tennis racket incident
• the Pinning him down and tickling him till he almost had an asthma attack incident...
Ahhh good times :))) of course this all stopped when he got bigger than me! haha
We always had each others back tho…
I remember one day when he was being chased in a huge game of tag in our road, and a bigger slower kid threw a massive spanner into his head…. Hmmm I think i may have gone a little bit mental… scarred the bejeezus out of the poor boy! No body messed with my little brother...
Well not unless it was me of course, then all bets were off! Haha
LET ME EXPLAIN
anyone who knows the Dickinson's will ALSO know we are a very competitive bunch! There is no such place a second place hahaha
From Monopoly to Skiing and everything in-between… Friendly competitive banter can sometimes dominate family life…
(KRIS - if you need solace in times of fierce banter, Tom will always be there for you!!!)
I think it is fair at this point to mention however, that during such times, more often than not, James did always end up the loser…. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH But James - TODAY you can stand proud and declare with certainty I AM THE ULTIMATE WINNER!
ALL JOKES ASIDE
I would like to say a few words directly to James:
• We are very close, this will never change.
• You are a very special person.
• You are smart.
• You are good and kind.
• You see things in amazing ways.
• Your potential is limitless (even if sometimes you don't see it - trust me it is).
• You grew up from a beautiful, caring, little boy, into a gentle, loving, handsome man…
• That follows his head and his heart wisely.
You make me prouder than you could possibly imagine in everything you do.
And Lastly, Just for you to know and keep: I have always been and will always be your Biggest Fan.
SO TO CLOSE
I would like to say on behalf of all of our family (those present and those looking down), that we are incredibly happy and honored that James has found such a beautiful, compassionate and loving partner in Kris, and we welcome her and her family with open arms.
(But Kris one USEFUL piece of advice - may I urge you to do something that I always did - let him win sometimes ;)
Thank you, and may you ALL raise your glasses to the happy couple!
Kx
Kelly
